Toyota Crown – A Japanese Classic with Bold Design
Throughout automotive history, certain models have stood out not only for their technical innovations but also for their distinctive character. One such model is the Toyota Crown, which has symbolized Japanese automotive quality, comfort, and prestige since 1955.
The 1972 Toyota Crown belongs to the model's fourth generation (S60/S70), which debuted in 1971. Unlike its predecessors, the new Crown introduced a futuristic design and unconventional body proportions. This generation also marked the transition from the Toyopet Crown name to Toyota Crown.
Dizains, kas apsteidza savu laiku A Design Ahead of Its Time
The fourth-generation Toyota Crown stood out with its distinctive Spindle Shape body design. Flowing lines, a pronounced hood, and an unconventional front end gave the car a futuristic appearance that was unusual for its time. Interestingly, the bold design initially failed to gain the expected popularity. Japanese buyers preferred more conservative vehicles, causing the Crown to lose its established position in the market. Today, however, this distinctive styling makes the fourth-generation Crown one of the most unique Japanese classic cars.
Under the hood of this Toyota Crown lies a 2.6-liter 4M-series inline-six gasoline engine, featuring a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) and an aluminum alloy cylinder head.
With a displacement of 2,563 cm³, the engine produces 140 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 222 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. Fuel is delivered through a two-barrel carburetor with an automatic choke. Although the Crown was not designed as a sports car, its six-cylinder engine provided confident performance and a smooth driving experience. Its greatest strengths were comfort, reliability, and driving pleasure – qualities that helped establish the Crown's reputation both in Japan and internationally.
Toyota Crown on the Big Screen
The fourth-generation Toyota Crown has also made its way onto the big screen. One example is the 2015 Hollywood drama The Sea of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, in which a 1973 Toyota Crown Super Saloon makes a brief appearance.
