New VW Crafter is ready to go to work!

A historical event took place on Saturday in “Kurbads” logistics center – the new Volkswagen “Crafter” drove first meters on Latvian soil. “Crafter” is one of the most popular commercial transport vehicles in the World.

“I like this new generation a lot more – comfortable driving position, easy steering, it’s also very quiet.” says Arnis Grunšteins, “Kurbads” driver who had the honour to deliver this model to Latvia. “For me it’s hard to judge how this car feels in traffic. But in the short moments we had at the warehouse I really enjoyed the new “Crafter”!”

A new production facility was built in Wrzesnia, Poland, especially for the new “Crafter”.

In order to understand precisely different customers’ requirements, engineers from Volkswagen accompanied vehicle users from key customer groups, including couriers, construction workers and long distance drivers on their rounds during the development stage. This meant they could identify the genuine needs of these drivers and fleets.

The new “Crafter” offers up plenty of choice when it comes to body sizes, with three different lengths available – 5,9 m, 6,84 m or 7,39 m.

Despite the usual boxy shape, the new Crafter will have the lowest drag coefficient in its class, at just 0.33. That makes it more slippery and aerodynamic than any other large van in production, and should pay dividends in fuel economy and emissions.

The van will have a Euro 6 2-liter diesel engine “EA 288 Commercial” that will be available with three power outputs – 102 HP, 140 HP or as a BiTurbo TDI with 177 HP.

At the moment in Latvia, only FWD models are available but from the summer clients will be able to choose also RWD and all-wheel-drive versions as well as the option of a manual or automatic gearbox. Such variety has never been seen before in this segment.
