Ameerika muskelauto number 2 on oma disainilt lihtne, mis on oluliselt kaasa aidanud selle edukale karjäärile. Kui ikooniline “pony car” Ford Mustang on olnud Kurbadsi klassikaliste autode “garažis”, ei saa me mööda vaadata selle peamisest rivaalist – Chevrolet Camaro’st.

Tuxedo Black 1967 Camaro Super Sport illustreerib suurepäraselt General Motorsi pingutusi, et haarata endale suur osa muskelautode turust – või vähemalt takistada Fordil kogu turgu vallutamast. Ja see “pirukas” oli suur. Esimesel aastal müüs Chevrolet 220 000 Camaro’t – korralik tulemus, kuid Ford edestas GM-i, müües 1967. aastal 480 000 Mustangi. Rääkimata sellest, et kahe aasta jooksul, mil GM oma strateegiat kavandas, suutis Ford müüa koguni 1,3 miljonit Mustangi.

Kuigi General Motors reageeris Mustangi fenomenile kiiremini kui Chrysler Corporation, kelle Dodge Challenger ilmus alles 1960. aastate lõpus – seitse aastat pärast Mustangi –, viidi Camaro projekt ikkagi läbi kiirustades. GM sai kiiresti aru, et Chevrolet Corvair oma taga mootori ja raamatu Unsafe at Any Speed järgi tekkinud mainega ei suutnud konkureerida Mustangi kerge ja sportliku ilmega, isegi mitte väidetavalt sportlikus Monza versioonis. Corvairil puudus ka ruum V8 mootori jaoks, samas kui tehniliselt sobivam Chevrolet Nova (eesmootor, tagavedu) nägi välja pigem nagu loomaarsti auto kui Mustangi rivaal. Jutud, et General Motors valmistab ette Mustangi konkurenti, ilmusid avalikkuse ette juba 1965. aastal, ning oli selge, et see saab olema Chevrolet, mitte Pontiac või Plymouth.

Mis maa peal on Camaro?

General Motors käivitas enneolematu ja uuendusliku PR-kampaania, et uuele mudelile võimalikult palju tähelepanu tõmmata. Kõigepealt levitati midagi tänapäeva valeuudiste sarnast – vihjeid, et uus mudel hakkab kandma nime Panther. Seejärel kutsuti Detroidi ajakirjanikud konverentskõnele, mis oli ühendatud telefoniliinide kaudu 14 muu linnaga – justkui tänapäevase kaugvideopresentatsiooni eelkäija, kuid ilma pildita. Lõpuks teatati, et uus mudel, järgides Chevrolet’ traditsiooni nimetada autod tähega C, hakkab kandma nime Camaro. Kui ajakirjanikud küsisid, mida Camaro tähendab, vastati neile, et see on “väike, vihane loom, kes sööb Mustange.”

Nimi Camaro pärines tegelikult prantsuse-inglise slängisõnastikust, kus see tähendas sõpra, kaaslast või usaldusväärset seltsilist. Kuigi ajakiri Car and Driver märkis oma esimeses proovisarkastiliselt, et ükski nende prantslastest sõber polnud sellisest sõnast kuulnud (ja et see kõlas pigem hispaaniapäraselt), meeldis avalikkusele selle fonetiline sarnasus prantsuskeelse camarade ja ingliskeelse comrade’iga. Nii sündiski Chevrolet Camaro, mis on jäänud selleks nimeks juba kuue põlvkonna ja kuuekümne aasta jooksul. Hispaania keele sõnaraamatust pole aga mõtet “Camaro’t” otsida – seal tähendab see lihtsalt krevetti.

Varjatud silmad

Esimese põlvkonna Camaro disain järgnes 1960. aastate parimatele traditsioonidele – pikk kapott, lühike tagaosa, väljendunud kaarekujuline tagatiib, kaks ust, kaarjad rattakoopa laiendid ja kaks paari erineva suurusega esitulesid. Erinevalt Lee Iacocca juhitud Mustangi meeskonnast ei pööranud General Motors konkreetsele stiilile liigset tähelepanu, mille tulemusena nägi esimene Camaro välja väga sarnane Plymouth Barracudale, spordiautole, mis ilmus enne Mustangi, kuid jäi selle varju.

 Salapärased varjatud esituled debüteerisid RS (Rally Sport) tehaselisa osana ning olid saadaval ka SS (Super Sport) paketis. Kokku oli tehases umbes 80 erinevat Camaro varianti, millele lisandus veel 40 edasimüüjate poolt pakutud versiooni, mistõttu oli 220 000 toodetud auto hulgas keeruline leida kahte täiesti identset.

Katuseta turvaauto

Kõrgetasemelisi Camaro SS mudeleid toodeti ainult V8 mootoritega, millest väikseim oli 350-kuuptollise (5,7-liitrise) töömahuga mootor, mis andis peaaegu 300 hobujõudu. Lisavarustuses oli saadaval ka 6,5-liitrine big-block V8, mis suutis arendada kuni 375 hobujõudu. Üks tähelepanuväärsemaid peatükke Camaro SS ajaloos on spetsiaalselt ehitatud kabriolett-turvaauto (pace car) Indianapolis 500 võidusõidule. Kuigi internetis levib sageli väide, et Chevrolet tootis müügiks 100 koopiat, ei vasta see tõele. Tegelikult valmistas Chevrolet ainult 100 sellist autot Indianapolis Motor Speedway jaoks, mis müüdi hiljem kasutatud autodena.

Hoia see lihtne ja inimesed saavad aru

Chevrolet Camaro lihtne konstruktsioon jättis mootorite ja rohkete lisavarustuse võimaluste kõrval vähe arutada. Pärast Corvairi ebaõnnestumist otsustas General Motors kasutada primitiivset šassiid koos eesmise alaraami ja ketaspiduritega, eelistades toorest jõudu keeruka juhitavuse või arenenud inseneritöö asemel.

Aja jooksul on selle väärtus märkimisväärselt muutunud ning tänapäeval võib olenevalt aasta-, seisukorra- ja lisavarustuse kombinatsioonist hästi säilinud eksemplari osta 25 000 – 35 000 dollari eest. Selline auto võib saada ainulaadseks pärliks igas kollektsioonis. SIA “KURBADS UN KO” (hereinafter – the Controller), through the website www.kurbads.lv (hereinafter – the Website), processes personal data obtained from the data subject – the Website user (hereinafter – the User).

If the User provides their personal data to the Controller by phone, via Website contact forms, by e-mail or postal mail, we store and use this information to fulfil or conclude a relevant service contract, including: customer identification; contract preparation and conclusion; provision of services (fulfilment of contractual obligations); customer service; handling and processing complaints; enhancing customer loyalty; administration of payments and settlements; debt recovery and collection; proof of facts; website maintenance and improvement; business planning and analytics; planning and record-keeping.
