Ancient Traditions at the Kurbads Midsummer Celebration
On the afternoon of June 12, the Kurbads logistics base was transformed into a true Midsummer celebration venue. Oak leaf wreaths, greenery decorations, Jāņi cheese, songs, and togetherness created a special atmosphere in which ancient Latvian traditions and the festive spirit came to life.
The official opening of the pre-Midsummer celebration was marked by the lighting of the summer solstice pūdele. This ancient fire tradition symbolizes the victory of light, the end of the old solar cycle, and the beginning of a new one. Later, the festive bonfire was also lit, its flames and warmth creating a unique sense of unity and bringing all those present together.
The celebration was led by the musicians of the folklore group "Brička" and its leader Līga Broduža, one of the most prominent representatives of Latvia’s younger generation of traditional culture practitioners. Together with her, the Kurbads team took part in songs, games, and summer solstice rituals, allowing everyone to become part of this ancient, living, and unifying tradition.
Midsummer is a special time when we can come together and appreciate the values that unite us both at work and in life. Traditions help us preserve our roots and pass them on to future generations,” said company owner Andis Pikāns at the conclusion of the event, wishing everyone sunny, joyful, and melodious Līgo celebrations.
Who Was the Most Accurate? Who Had the Most Beautiful Outfit?
Alongside songs and dancing, guests also enjoyed other traditional Jāņi activities, including wreath-making, decorating with greenery, eating Jāņi cheese, and participating in exciting games. Participants competed in archery and axe throwing, demonstrating both precision and enthusiasm. Edgars from the Kurbads Serviss team became the most accurate archer, while Līga Borovska-Brunava achieved the best result in axe throwing at the log target.
The event concluded with the traditional festive attire competition. In the women's category, Līga Borovska-Brunava, an employee of Kurbads Ice Hall, was awarded the title of the most beautifully dressed participant. In the men's category, Mārtiņš Pozņaks from the Kurbads marketing team remained unbeaten for the second consecutive year.
One of the central symbols of the celebration was Kurbads' 30th anniversary car transporter #125, whose cab is decorated with the mythical image of Kurbads created by artist Alfreds Paulausks. The figure symbolizes strength, courage, and perseverance, embodying the company's spirit and values. In keeping with the summer solstice theme, the transporter was adorned with an oak leaf garland crafted by the ladies of Kurbads.
